Other teachers well-meaning but misguided ones, in my opinion probably spend equal amounts of time instilling in their students the very misconception I guard against.

This assignment is designed to help students make connections between their gut feelings about a work of literature and more thoughtful ideas like the kind appropriate for essays.

First, students should read the short story or other literary work for homework, and the teacher should discuss the story with the class I will be posting a close reading of the story soon. I provide the students with the following list of literary terms:. It is always my hope that students will come to high school knowing at least some of these terms, and most do.

They might not have a lot of experience actually using these terms in their own writing, however. This step is probably the easiest part of this assignment. Ideally it should be done for homework I assign Steps 1, 2, 9th grade writing assignments, and 3 for homework on the same night, 9th grade writing assignments, and I find the assignment manageable for most studentsbut it can be done as an in-class activity as well, either individually or with partners.

Very simply, each student should write a paragraph of about words responding at a gut level to any aspect of the text. Helen is a good, kind person, but she annoys me a little bit as a character. The first thing we learn about her is that she does whatever her friend Maybelle tells her to do, even when Maybelle is unkind and threatens to stop spending time with Helen unless Helen gets a computer and starts sending email.

I also get a little annoyed that Helen is content with such a limited life. She never drives her car, and she and her friend never walk farther than the mall.

Helen can also be manipulative sometimes, 9th grade writing assignments. Later, though, when I have them complete this assignment using Bless Me, Ultima, they may write about any aspect of the text. After they complete Step One, students should print out their work Note: if students 9th grade writing assignments doing this assignment by longhand in class, they should be encouraged to double-space their work so they will have room to complete Step Two, and they should use a markedly 9th grade writing assignments color pen for each step.

Now the students should read through their paragraphs and either underline, circle, or bracket words and phrases that can be described using one or more literary terms.

Sentences 1 and 5 are intended to be written more or less at a ninth grade level. Feel free to substitute a difference challenge word if you happen to have a 9th grade writing assignments that day. Sample sentence 3 is written at a ninth-grade level, but it makes a connection that many students may not make. The goal of Sentence 3 is to make the students say Ohhhhh!

Sentence 4 is similar, 9th grade writing assignments, though a bit more subtle, 9th grade writing assignments. With student input, 9th grade writing assignments teacher can edit sentences as needed until they truly meet the guidelines above.

Before Step One: Building a Literary Vocabulary First, students should read 9th grade writing assignments short story or other literary work for homework, and the teacher should discuss the story with the class I will be posting a close reading of the story soon.

I am planning to post complete definitions and examples of these terms soon, 9th grade writing assignments. Step One: Reader Response This step is probably the easiest part of this assignment. Step Two After they complete Step One, students should print out their work Note: if students are doing this assignment by longhand in class, they should be encouraged to double-space their work so they will have room to complete Step Two, and they should use a markedly different color pen for each step.

This process, which may seem obvious to some adults, can be very hard for students who are new to literary analysis. Many 9 th 9th grade writing assignments will need to practice this skill quite extensively.

Good topic sentences are not required to contain literary terms; however, a topic sentence that contains a literary term will almost certainly meet Guideline 1 above. If students feel stuck at this point in the activity, tell them to use a literary term in each sentence. If they focus on including these terms and using them correctly, chances are they will be on their way to writing effective topic sentences.

My samples: 1. While Helen is a good, kind person, she is not entirely sympathetic as a protagonist. I will write more soon about teaching the analytical paragraph. Happy Saturday!
